Throughout Pink October, we’re joining Australians across the country in raising awareness of breast cancer, recognising those whose lives have been affected and supporting research towards a future where no one dies from the disease.
Breast cancer affects thousands of Australians every year. Behind every diagnosis is a person, along with their family, friends and wider community.
This October, we’re proud to play our part.
1 in 7 women
will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
Around 1 in 600 men
will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
56 Australians every day
are diagnosed with breast cancer.
More than 3,300 Australians each year
lose their lives to the disease.
More than 160,000 people living in Australia today have also been diagnosed with breast cancer within the past 10 years.
These numbers are why awareness, research and continued support remain so important.
There has been significant progress in breast cancer outcomes in Australia.
Since the National Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1994, the breast cancer death rate has fallen by more than 40%, supported by advances in research, earlier detection and improved treatments.
Today, the five-year relative survival rate for breast cancer in Australia is approximately 93%.
But with more than 20,000 Australians diagnosed each year, there is still more to be done.
Pink October is about more than wearing pink.
By supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation, donations help fund world-class research across every stage of breast cancer.
PREVENT
Developing better ways to understand breast cancer risk and prevent the disease.
DETECT
Finding breast cancer earlier, when there are more opportunities for successful treatment.
TREAT
Developing more effective and targeted treatments, including for difficult-to-treat and metastatic breast cancers.
STOP
Understanding how to prevent breast cancer from progressing, spreading or returning.
Since 1994, the National Breast Cancer Foundation has invested more than $250 million into over 650 research grants across Australia.
Every contribution helps researchers continue the work that can lead to earlier diagnoses, better treatments and more lives saved.
Throughout October, we’re proud to show our support for everyone affected by breast cancer and the researchers working to change its future.
Whether it’s wearing a touch of pink, starting a conversation, sharing awareness or making a donation, Pink October is an opportunity for all of us to contribute.
Together, we can turn awareness into action and help move closer to the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer.
