Love, sacrifice, and heartbreak are at the heart of this timeless opera.

La Traviata tells the story of Violetta, a glamorous courtesan, and Alfredo, a young aristocrat who falls deeply in love with her. Their relationship begins with passion and hope, but it soon comes under pressure from the expectations of society. When Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont, intervenes, he asks Violetta to leave Alfredo in order to protect the family’s reputation. Faced with an impossible choice, she agrees to give up everything — her love, her independence, and ultimately her future.

Verdi’s music carries the story from lively, elegant party scenes to quiet, deeply emotional moments, capturing both the joy and the tragedy of their relationship. The score is rich, expressive, and filled with melodies that have made this one of the most loved operas in the world.

Whether you’re attending the opera for the first time or returning to a familiar favourite, La Traviata offers powerful storytelling and music that continues to resonate. This new production, directed by Sarah Giles, brings a fresh and emotional interpretation to the stage, with Jessica Blunt starring as Violetta.
